3FE25 UTP Cat 5 star quad (2022 11)

Nei giorni scorsi ho riparato un canale del sistema MDD3ZC350. I continui upgrade e gli spostamenti dovuti alle pulizie hanno sfibrato la flangia in MDF dove si è aperta una fessura, l'MDF non è adatto a lavorare in trazione. Aggiunto un anello di rinforzo in PVC ho fissato il tutto con viti, ora la flangia in MDF lavora come spessore solo in compressione. Il rinforzo è stato aggiunto anche all'altro canale.

In recent days I have repaired a channel of the MDD3ZC350 system. The continuous upgrades and displacements due to cleaning have weakened the MDF flange where a crack has opened, the MDF is not suitable for working in traction. Added a PVC reinforcement ring and fixed everything with screws, now the MDF flange works as a thickness only in compression. Reinforcement has also been added to the other channel.

Con il prototipo MDD3ZC350 smontato ho cambiato il cablaggio usando il cavo per reti UTP categoria 5. Nel polo positivo sono in parallelo i fili arancio, arancio-bianco, marrone, marrone-bianco. Nel polo negativo sono in parallelo i fili verde, verde-bianco, blu, blu-bianco. Le coppie ritorte sono in diagonale in una configurazione star quad.

With the disassembled MDD3ZC350 prototype I changed the wiring using the cable for UTP category 5 networks. The orange, orange-white, brown, brown-white wires are in parallel in the positive pole. In the negative pole the green, green-white, blue, blue-white wires are in parallel. The twisted pairs are diagonally in a star quad configuration.

I fili del polo positivo sono più corti di 25 mm dei fili del polo negativo che passano dietro il raggio del cestello in acciaio del driver 3FE25. Si deve fare attenzione a mantenere almeno un mm di distanza fra lo spider e il polo negativo che passa dietro al raggio del cestello. Entrambi i poli sono saldati direttamente sui terminali del driver e il cavo lungo un paio di metri va direttamente all'amplificatore con terminali a banana da 4 mm.

The positive pole wires are 25 mm shorter than the negative pole wires which pass behind the spoke of the 3FE25 driver's steel basket. Care must be taken to maintain at least one mm of distance between the spider and the negative pole which passes behind the spoke of the basket. Both poles are soldered directly onto the driver terminals and the couple of meters long lead goes directly to the amplifier with 4mm banana plugs.

All'ascolto ho notato un miglioramento che però potrebbe essere dovuto all'eliminazione della fessura nella flangia del canale sinistro. E' un cablaggio semplice da realizzare, molto economico ed efficace nel minimizzare i disturbi elettromagnetici, lo userò anche nei prossimi prototipi.

Listening to it I noticed an improvement which however could be due to the elimination of the crack in the left channel flange. It is a simple wiring to make, very cheap and effective in minimizing electromagnetic disturbances, I will also use it in the next prototypes.

In questi anni mi sono documentato sui parametri RLC ottimali che dovrebbe avere il cavo che collega gli altoparlanti. La mia conclusione è che trattandosi di parametri lineari non possono degradare la qualità del suono riprodotto. Esistono molte tecniche semplici ed economiche che riducono i tre parametri a livelli adeguati per un impianto per uso domestico. Con capacita e induttanze troppo elevate si va a intervenire soprattutto sulla risposta in frequenza.

In recent years I have documented the optimal RLC parameters that the cable connecting the speakers should have. My conclusion is that since these are linear parameters they cannot degrade the quality of the reproduced sound. There are many simple and inexpensive techniques that reduce the three parameters to levels suitable for a home system. With capacitances and inductances that are too high, the frequency response is affected above all.

Questo cablaggio ha una capacità di circa 100 pF/m e mantiene a bassi livelli l'induttanza (riduce il campo magnetico emesso). La sezione ridotta dei cavi non è una limitazione in questo caso, con il driver 3FE25 della Faital-Pro con un watt si superano i 90 dB a un metro. Andando oltre si possono distubare familiari, vicini e anche le proprie orecchie in quanto il driver inizia a generare distorsione.

This wiring has a capacitance of approximately 100 pF/m and keeps the inductance at low levels (reduces the magnetic field emitted). The reduced section of the cables is not a limitation in this case, with the 3FE25 driver from Faital-Pro with one watt it exceeds 90 dB at one meter. Going further can disturb family members, neighbors and even your own ears as the driver starts generating distortion.

Il principale vantaggio di questo cablaggio è la particolare geometria che riduce l'effetto delle interazioni elettromagnetiche. In particolare riduce le emmissioni del cavo stesso che possono generare fenomeni non lineari interagendo con il driver e con l'amplificatore. Nel cablaggio star quad per ogni circuito che genera un campo magnetico ne esiste un secondo che genera un campo magnetico di segno opposto a una distanza di pochi millimetri. L'eliminazione dei connettori evita di avere superfici di alcuni cm quadrati in grado di emettere campi magnetici. Facendo passare il filo del polo negativo dietro il raggio del cestello del driver si evita di inserire materiale ferromegnetico all'interno del circuito.

The main advantage of this harness is the particular geometry which reduces the effect of electromagnetic interactions. In particular, it reduces the emissions of the cable itself which can generate non-linear phenomena by interacting with the driver and the amplifier. In star quad wiring, for each circuit that generates a magnetic field, there is a second that generates a magnetic field of opposite sign at a distance of a few millimetres. The elimination of the connectors avoids having surfaces of a few square centimeters capable of emitting magnetic fields. Passing the negative pole wire behind the spoke of the driver basket avoids inserting ferromagnetic material into the circuit.

Il cablaggio star quad con un singolo cavo UTP cat 5 è utilizzabile per potenze fino a una decina di watt, con una impedenza di 8 Ohm la corrente elettrica resta inferiore a un ampere. La bassa capacità lo rende adatto anche con amplificatori di potenza ridotta.

Star quad cabling with a single UTP cat 5 cable can be used for powers up to about ten watts, with an impedance of 8 Ohm the electric current remains less than an ampere. The low capacitance makes it suitable even with low power amplifiers.

La vicinanza fra i conduttori che formano quattro circuiti con orientamenti opposti riduce l'induttanza totale e minimizza l'interazione con materiale ferromagnetico nelle vicinanze del cavo degli altoparlanti. Ogni oggetto ferromagnetico aumenta notevolmente il campo magnetico nella zona in cui si trova e anche il flusso magnetico concatenato nei circuiti vicini. L'effetto è più rilevante se il materiale ferromagnetico si trova all'interno del circuito. Nel caso del raggio del cestello del drive con il collegamento standard si crea una componente non lineare nell'induttanza del circuito, in un ascolto a basso volume o in auto non crea problemi, se si ascolta un brano flac con un impianto di qualità si può percepire la distorsione.

The proximity of conductors forming four circuits in opposite orientations reduces total inductance and minimizes interaction with ferromagnetic material in the vicinity of the speaker wire. Each ferromagnetic object greatly increases the magnetic field in the area in which it is located and also the magnetic flux chained in nearby circuits. The effect is more pronounced if ferromagnetic material is inside the circuit. In the case of the radius of the drive basket with the standard connection a non-linear component is created in the inductance of the circuit, when listening at low volume or in the car it does not create problems, if you listen to a flac song with a quality system you can perceive the distortion.

Alle frequenze audio, i cavi degli altoparlanti possono disturbare altri componenti del sistema se il flusso del campo magnetico generato è collegato ad altri circuiti. Una bassa induttanza misura la bassa energia magnetica immagazzinata e riduce al minimo gli effetti dei flussi di campo magnetico incatenati tra due circuiti. Un modo per ridurre al minimo l'induttanza è avvicinare i conduttori aumentando la capacità del cavo. Lo svantaggio di questa scelta è che l'amplificatore deve essere in grado di gestire la potenza extra necessaria per caricare e scaricare il condensatore (cavo).

At audio frequencies, speaker cables can disturb other system components if the flux of the generated magnetic field is connected to other circuits. A low inductance measures the low magnetic energy stored and minimizes the effects of magnetic field fluxes chained between two circuits. One way to minimize inductance is to bring the conductors closer together by increasing the capacitance of the cable. The downside to this choice is that the amplifier must be able to handle the extra power required to charge and discharge the capacitor (lead).

Un cavo a bassa capacità è utile se non si vuole cambiare l'amplificatore, il mio caso. La capacità del cavo quad-star è notevolmente ridotta senza aumentare eccessivamente l'induttanza. Per ogni fase i conduttori raddoppiano e di conseguenza si riduce la resistenza e l’eventuale comparsa dell’effetto pelle. La riduzione della capacità parassita è ottenuta utilizzando come supporti i distanziatori a croce in plastica per la posa delle piastrelle di ceramica. I conduttori hanno una distanza relativa di alcuni cm e una capacità di un ordine di grandezza inferiore alla configurazione con gli stessi conduttori alla distanza di 1-2 mm all’interno di una guaina. Il fatto che in vari punti i cavi piegandosi arrivino a toccarsi non ha molta influenza sulla capacità totale che si mantiene sui 30 pF/m.

A low capacitance cable is useful if you don't want to change the amplifier, my case. The capacitance of the star squad cable is greatly reduced without excessively increasing inductance. For each phase the conductors double and consequently the resistance and the eventual appearance of the skin effect is reduced. The reduction of the parasitic capacitance is obtained by using the plastic cross spacers for the laying of ceramic tiles as supports. The conductors have a relative distance of a few cm and a capacity of an order of magnitude lower than the configuration with the same conductors at a distance of 1-2 mm inside a sheath. The fact that at various points the cables bend to touch each other does not have much influence on the total capacity which is maintained at 30 pF / m.

Un’onda sonora con una frequenza di 10 KHz ha una lunghezza d’onda di soli 3,4 cm. Un’onda elettromagnetica a 10 KHz ha una lunghezza d’onda di 30 Km per cui il campo magnetico alternato generato dall’induttanza del cavo dei diffusori, se abbastanza intenso, può influenzare contemporaneamente tutti gli apparati dell’impianto generando interferenze. Posizionando in diagonale i due fili dello stesso polo elettrico, lateralmente al cavo si avrà sempre l’effetto di spire che generano campi magnetici opposti riducendo le possibili interferenze sugli apparati audio e mantenendo ridotta l’induttanza parassita.

A sound wave with a frequency of 10 KHz has a wavelength of only 3.4 cm. An electromagnetic wave at 10 KHz has a wavelength of 30 Km, so that the alternating magnetic field generated by the inductance of the speaker cable, if intense enough, can simultaneously affect all the equipment of the system generating interference. Placing the two wires of the same electric pole diagonally, the cable will always have the effect of coils that generate opposing magnetic fields, reducing the possible interference on the audio equipment and keeping the parasitic inductance reduced.

Nel caso in cui i cavi 662g siano troppo ingombranti o scomodi una valida alternativa è utilizzare un cavo UTP cat6 per reti dati Ethernet in rame. Vanno collegati assieme i colori:
- bianco-arancio, arancio, bianco–marone, marrone
- bianco-verde, verde, bianco-blu, blu.
La capacità aumenta a circa 100 pF/m ma sono più comodi da usare. La configurazione elettrica è sempre quadripolare con un separatore plastico interno che mantiene in posizione diagonale le coppie di fili. Resta minimizzata l’emissione di disturbi elettromagnetici.

In case the 662g cables are too bulky or uncomfortable a viable alternative is to use a UTP cat6 cable for copper Ethernet data networks. The colors must be linked together:
- white-orange, orange, white-brown, brown
- white-green, green, white-blue, blue.
The capacity increases to around 100 pF / m but they are more comfortable to use. The electrical configuration is always four-pole with an internal plastic separator that keeps the pairs of wires in a diagonal position. The emission of electromagnetic disturbances remains minimized.
